What Happens During a Heater Tune-Up?

During our annual heater tune-up, our technicians will thoroughly inspect, clean, adjust, and/or calibrate the major components of your heating system. Some of the specific things we’ll do during this HVAC maintenance service include:

  •  Cleaning dust and debris from your heater
  •  Checking all electrical connects and tightening them as necessary
  •  Inspecting and testing all safety controls
  •  Checking the air filter and replacing it as needed
  •  Verify and adjust gas pressure
  •  Inspect and clean burners

We recommend getting a heater tune-up at least once a year and, ideally, before the cold season when your heating system will get regular use.

My Heat Stopped Working, Why?

Depending on whether your heat source is a gas heater or heat pump, there are several potential issues that could prevent you from receiving heat. We do not want you left out in the cold any more than you do so our focus, if we cannot prevent this from happening, is to diagnose the issue quickly and efficiently so we can have you up and running before anyone must sleep in the cold.

When boiled down to the very simplest of explanations, a heat pump is an AC system switched into reverse. Instead of pulling heat out of the home and sending it outside, it pulls heat from the outside and sends it indoors. At first this might not make sense but remember: cold is not complete absence of heat, just a presence of less heat.

The problems that might arise from heat pumps are largely the same as problems we would see on an air conditioner, such as electrical malfunction, too much or too little refrigerant charge, or dirty coils. Rest assured though, that our technicians take pride in making sure that the problem gets resolved to best take care of you.

Much like your car, gas heaters (more commonly referred to as furnaces) burn a fossil fuel to perform work. Unlike the car though, we are trying to retain the heat generated from combustion instead of dissipating it. Your gas heater moves the heat from the exhaust gases to the air that blows through your vents in more or less the same manner that you might warm your cold hands by placing them on a warm part of your body.

Let no one tell you otherwise, gas heaters are robust and reliable machines. They can operate for possibly years at a time and never have an issue. We don’t advise anyone to sit and let them waste away though. As we stated, for the best life of your equipment it is highly advised to have them serviced yearly. This can not only prevent you from getting blindsided by a necessary repair bill but will also help your equipment last longer in general.

The core issues seen with gas heaters when they break down are electrical in nature. Electronics are being made better and better with time, but they do wear down faster than mechanical components. Burnt out control boards, transformers, and relays are common with broke down gas burners. That said, issues with locked gas valves and broken igniters do happen. Whatever the concern, you can trust our technicians are more than happy to help you stay warm when the winter comes knocking!

How Do You Know If You Should Repair or Replace?

A good rule of thumb is if the cost of repair is 50% of the new furnace’s price, you should go ahead and replace it because it will save you money in the long run.
